Florida SouthWestern State freshman Carlos Rodriguez was drafted in the 6th round of the 2021 Major League Baseball Draft on Monday, making him the highest drafted Buccaneer since the program’s rebirth in 2016 and the school’s highest since 1993 when Kerry Ward went in the 4th round to the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Three rounds after watching his teammate Carlos Rodriguez drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers, Florida SouthWestern State lefthander Alex Ayala heard his name called in the 2021 Major League Baseball Draft, as the 2020 American League Champion Tampa Bay Rays picked the Bucs ace in the 9th round, 281st overall to make FSW one of just two NJCAA programs with two picks on the second day of the draft.

Three years ago, Florida SouthWestern Head Baseball Coach Ben Bizier gave local prep right-hander Robert Wegielnik a chance.  He didn’t have a scholarship available at the time, but he had a jersey, and Wegielnik made the most of it, parlaying a walk on spot in 2019 to a Division I scholarship in 2021 as last week he officially signed his National Letter of Intent to play for Florida Atlantic next season.
